For the past 6 years I taught as a college math instructor at the University of Nebraska; as an instructor I focused on student engagement and giving detailed feedback. I prepare for tutoring as I would teaching, ready not only to explain the material we are covering but all of the skills it builds on and where the skills may be useful going forward. In addition to privately tutoring for 3 years at Nebraska and 2 years at Truman in math for high school and college students I have worked in math and chemistry tutoring centers for the past 10 years. Years of experience teaching and tutoring have taught me the importance of patience and positivity in helping students. There is no one right approach, all students will have different needs and it is important to be flexible, learning to adapt to what they benefit from most. My initial approach is always to focus on building confidence and ensuring that students have a strong basis of problem solving skills and strategies. In working with students on new material I always focus on having the students do the work. I believe it's vitally important that a tutor not become a crutch. As such, I seek not to do the problems assigned to students, but whenever possible to help them through similar problems leaving them the opportunity to practice on that which their teacher has selected as most important. In addition to degrees in math and biology, I have a strong background in physics and chemistry. I completed two years of college coursework in chemistry, as well as tutoring through the chemistry honors society for 4 years. I am quite comfortable with high school physics through my work in math. For strong students seeking to work on topics beyond the classroom experience I am happy to help with advanced topics including those involved in contest mathematics.
